Origins of the Mexican Gold Libertad

We buy gold coins, including both gold and silver Libertads, the official bullion coin issued by the Mexican government. The modern Libertad was first minted in 1981 in gold, succeeding the historic gold Centenario coin.

Back in 1921, the Mexican Mint introduced the gold Centenario to mark the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The celebration included unveiling a Winged Victory statue, also called the Angel of Independence, in Mexico City.

The original Centenario had a face value of 50 Pesos but was not treated as legal tender by the Banco de México. The coin’s obverse showed a replica of Winged Victory, while the reverse displayed the Mexican coat of arms. Though the modern Libertad design has evolved, it still honors this classic imagery.

Meet the Mexican Gold Libertad

The first Mexican Gold Libertad coins were minted in 1981 in 1 oz, ½ oz, and ¼ oz weights, with close to one million coins produced that year. Production paused for about a decade before resuming in 1991 with the original weights plus 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins.

Between 1991 and 1994, minting continued with limits on fractional coins. Production paused again from 1995 to 2000, with a small run of 15,530 coins in 2000. Since 2002, consistent minting of Mexican Gold Libertads in all five sizes has taken place, growing in popularity year after year.

Alongside bullion coins, the Mexican Mint offers proof versions of the Libertad. The proof coins first appeared in 1989, with regular production from 2005 onward.

Starting in 2018, a Reverse Proof Mexican Gold Libertad was added in 1 oz and ½ oz sizes. These coins feature frosted backgrounds and mirrored details for striking visual contrast, making them rare and collectible with limited mintages.

Other Mexican Gold Coins

While the Mexican Gold Libertad coins are the modern gold bullion coins produced by the Mexican Mint, they are not the only gold coins ever issued by the mint. Before the introduction of modern pure gold bullion coins, the Mexican Mint produced Gold Pesos that served as circulating currency. These Gold Pesos came in several denominations, issued during various periods of Mexican history. The denominations include:

  • 2 Peso
  • 5 Peso
  • 10 Peso
  • 20 Peso
  • 50 Peso

The most renowned among these is the 50 Peso Mexican Gold Coin, commonly known as the Gold Centenario. This coin was first minted in 1921 by the Mexican Mint to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain. It introduced the iconic Winged Victoria design, which is now featured on the Mexican Libertad bullion coins. The Centenario carries a face value of 50 Pesos and is considered legal tender. It was originally minted from 1921 through 1931. After a hiatus of over ten years, the coin was reissued starting in 1943, responding to the rising demand for gold during World War II. The mint produced coins with new date marks from 1943 to 1947, and then again from 1949 to 1972, with a special commemorative date of 1947.

Other denominations of Mexican Gold Pesos first appeared in 1870 under the reign of Emperor Maximilian during the Second Mexican Empire. Many additional denominations were introduced in the early 20th century. These coins typically display a denomination and wreath design on one side, while the other side features a bust of a national leader. The portraits and designs vary depending on the coin’s date and the historical era in which they were issued.

Design History of the Mexican Gold Libertad

The 1981 Mexican Gold Libertad initially replicated the Centenario’s design: Winged Victory facing forward holding a wreath and broken chains symbolizing freedom. The background shows the volcanic peaks Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, representing Aztec legend.

The coin’s reverse displayed the Mexican coat of arms with an eagle fighting a rattlesnake, surrounded by “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.”

Since 2000, the Libertad features Winged Victory in profile, with updated engraving placement for face value, metal content, purity, and mint mark. The reverse now includes the modern coat of arms surrounded by ten historical versions representing Mexico’s evolving identity.
