American Commemorative Gold Coins We Buy at DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS

American Gold Commemoratives from the United States Mint hold lasting historical and collectible value. While many modern collectors are familiar with purchasing commemorative issues, the history of these coins dates back to the mid-19th century. The first widely recognized commemorative coin struck in the US dates to 1848, and since then, the Mint has issued select commemoratives in silver, copper, and gold.

At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we specialize in buying US commemorative gold coins directly from the public. Our interest includes historic releases, modern issues, and limited-mintage pieces that honor milestones in American history and important individuals.

Initial US Commemorative Gold Coins

The return of commemorative coinage by the US Mint came in 1982 with the George Washington silver half-dollar. Shortly after, in 1984, the Mint released its first modern American Gold Commemoratives, a $10 gold coin celebrating the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Since then, various $5 and $10 American Gold Commemoratives have been released. At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we purchase these coins and offer top value for sellers. Examples include:

  • 1986 Liberty: Featuring the Statue of Liberty’s face on the obverse and an eagle in flight on the reverse.
  • 1987 Constitution: A $5 coin showing an eagle with a quill pen and “We the People” on the reverse.
  • 1991 Mount Rushmore Anniversary: With an eagle flying over Mount Rushmore and “Mount Rushmore National Memorial” inscribed.
  • 1995 Civil War Battlefields: Depicting a bugler on horseback with a bald eagle on the reverse.
  • 1997 Jackie Robinson: Honoring his legacy with a portrait and the phrase “Legacy of Courage.”
  • 2007 Jamestown: Marking the settlement’s 400th anniversary with depictions of Capt. John Smith and the Jamestown Memorial Church.

We actively buy $5 and $10 American Gold Commemoratives in all conditions and date marks. Coins may arrive in multiples of the same year and design when sold in collections, and we provide accurate appraisals for each.

2016 Commemorative Gold Coins – A Special Release

One of the most remarkable modern commemorative issues from the US Mint came in 2016. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of some of the nation’s most iconic circulation coin designs, the Mint reissued them as American Gold Commemoratives in 24-karat gold. These American Gold Commemoratives honored one of the greatest redesign efforts in US Mint history and were released with limited mintages, special presentation boxes, and a Certificate of Authenticity. The 2016 American Gold Commemoratives revived three historic designs from 1916.

2016 1/10 oz American Gold Mercury Dime: First struck in 1916, the Mercury Dime featured Adolph A. Weinman’s Winged Liberty design. The obverse shows Liberty in left-profile wearing a winged cap, along with inscriptions of “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” Weinman’s initials “AW,” and the date. The reverse depicts a Roman fasces symbolizing strength and unity, wrapped in an olive branch representing peace. Because Liberty’s cap resembled that of the Roman god Mercury, the coin became known as the Mercury Dime. It originally circulated from 1916 to 1945. The 2016 version replicated the design in 24-karat gold with a 2016 date mark.

2016 1/4 oz American Gold Standing Liberty Quarter: Another 1916 release, the Standing Liberty Quarter, was created by Hermon Atkins MacNeil. Liberty stands between two walls facing east, holding a shield in her left hand and an olive branch in her right. The design symbolized America’s readiness to defend itself during World War I while still seeking peace. The reverse shows an eagle in flight. The quarter was in circulation from 1916 until 1930, and the 2016 gold edition revived the original artistry in a 1/4 oz format.

2016 1/2 oz American Gold Walking Liberty Half Dollar: Adolph A. Weinman also designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, considered one of the finest American coin designs after Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 Liberty. The obverse depicts Liberty striding toward the rising sun, symbolizing progress and hope. The reverse features a bald eagle perched on a cliff edge with wings spread, clutching a branch. The coin circulated from 1916 to 1947, and the 2016 gold reissue brought it back in a 1/2 oz weight.

Each of the 2016 Commemorative Gold Coins was issued by the US Mint in weights reflecting the size of the original circulation coins. While they carry nominal face values, their actual worth is tied to their gold content. Coins were sold with official US Mint boxes and a Certificate of Authenticity, and many examples today are available with PCGS or NGC certification.

American Liberty Gold Coins

In 2017, the United States Mint unveiled the American Liberty Gold Coin series to commemorate the 225th anniversary of its founding in 1792. Throughout US history, the Mint has created numerous depictions of Liberty, most of them inspired by classical Greek and Roman imagery. With the American Liberty Gold Series, the Mint introduced designs that better reflect the diverse cultural heritage of the nation.

The 2017 American Liberty Gold Coin presented Liberty as a woman with African-American features, a significant step toward modernizing her representation. In 2019, a new design depicted Liberty in left-profile relief with a fresh interpretation of her crown. Instead of a traditional headdress, rays of the sun radiated from behind her head while her hair flowed freely in the wind.

Each American Liberty Gold Coin comes in a protective capsule, with a presentation box and Certificate of Authenticity from the US Mint. All coins are struck at the West Point Mint and carry the “W” mint mark on the obverse.

Following the success of the 2017 release, the Mint introduced a 1/10 oz goldversion of the design in 2018. In 2019, the series evolved once more with another striking image of Liberty. The updated design showcased a modern, graceful bust of Liberty with loose, flowing hair, crowned by radiant sun rays rather than a traditional crown. Struck in high relief with an enhanced finish, the coin combined polished and frosted elements for exceptional visual detail.

History of US Commemorative Coinage

The earliest recognized commemorative gold coin dates back to 1848, a $2.50 coin stamped “CAL” to mark California’s gold discovery. This release is widely considered the first US commemorative. Later, coins such as the 1892 Columbian half-dollar and the 1893 Isabella quarter were struck to honor historic milestones.

Through the early 20th century, commemoratives included unique issues like the 1926 Sesquicentennial coins featuring both George Washington and President Calvin Coolidge. These historic releases remain highly collectible, and we are always interested in buying them.
