Design Aspects of America the Beautiful Silver Coins

All silver coins, including America the Beautiful coins we purchase, have a uniform obverse design, while the reverse features unique imagery representing a specific national park, forest, or monument. Each reverse design was chosen through collaboration among the jurisdiction’s governor or chief executive, the US Department of the Interior, the Secretary of the Treasury, the US Commission of Fine Arts, and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. The final design approval rests with the Secretary of the Treasury.

The obverse side of each coin features the standard left-profile portrait of President George Washington, created in 1932 by John Flanagan and based on a 1786 bust by William Cousins. The face of the coin includes standard phrases such as “United States of America,” “In God We Trust,” and the coin’s face value.

Foundation of the ATB Series

The ATB series traces back to the 50 State Quarters program, launched in 1999. Following its success, the Mint extended the program to include territories and DC, eventually creating the America the Beautiful Silver coin series, authorized in 2008 by the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act.

The ATB coins contain .999 pure silver and are available in uncirculated and bullion versions. Uncirculated coins have a matte finish and a “P” mint mark, while bullion coins have a mirror-like finish.

Background on the ATB Series

The ATB (America the Beautiful) Silver Coin series was authorized by Congress in 2008 through the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act. Unlike the earlier 50 State Quarters program, the ATB series required significant design changes, creating a distinct product. While the state quarters featured unique images on the reverse of standard 25-cent coins, ATB coins are struck on entirely new blanks.

Each America the Beautiful quarter contains .999 pure silver and weighs 5 ounces. The coins are produced in two versions: uncirculated coins for collectors and exhibitors, and bullion coins for investors. Several key differences distinguish these versions:

  • Mint Mark: Uncirculated coins display a “P” mint mark below “In God We Trust” on the obverse, identifying the Philadelphia Mint as the source. Bullion coins do not have mint marks.
  • Finish: Uncirculated coins feature a matte finish achieved through vapor blasting, while bullion coins have a reflective, mirror-like finish.
  • Packaging: Uncirculated coins come in individual plastic capsules inside a presentation box, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Bullion coins are shipped in plastic capsules, mint tubes containing 10 coins, or Monster Boxes with 100 coins (10 tubes).

Most ATB coins introduced entirely new designs on the reverse for each of the 50 states. Only Arizona, California, and South Dakota depicted the same locations as their state quarters, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park, and Mount Rushmore, respectively, but each design was distinct.

Unlike the separate state and territory quarter programs, the ATB series is a 56-coin program, releasing five new designs each year. The program covers all 50 states, five territories, and the federal district of Washington, D.C. The first coins were released in 2010, with annual releases of five coins continuing through 2021. The Secretary of the Treasury has the authority to extend the program through 2033 if deemed appropriate.

Selection of the Designs

Reverse designs were selected collaboratively with governors or chief executives, the US Mint, and the Secretary of the Treasury. Obverse designs consistently feature the left-profile portrait of President George Washington by John Flanagan, based on the 1786 bust by William Cousins.
