At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we buy silver coins, including American Silver Eagle coins, from customers across the country. Recognized worldwide, the American Silver Eagle is a highly sought-after silver bullion coin originating from the United States Mint. Authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, the first American Silver Eagle coins were issued in 1986 and have remained a staple for investors and collectors. If you have American Silver Eagles to sell, we are ready to offer you competitive prices and a seamless selling experience.
The American Silver Eagle coin first appeared with the 1986 date stamp on the obverse side, marking its introduction as the official silver bullion coin of the US. Each coin contains 1 oz of .999 fine silver and carries a $1 face value guaranteed by the federal government. The design features Lady Liberty on the front and the iconic American bald eagle on the back. The coin’s consistent design helps maintain its high demand in the secondary market.
American Silver Eagles come in three distinct types: uncirculated (bullion), proof, and burnished coins. Since 1986, uncirculated coins have been issued annually to meet investor demand. Proof versions debuted the same year but were temporarily halted in 2009 due to silver shortages. Burnished coins were introduced in 2006 as a collector’s option and resumed production after a brief pause in 2009 and 2010.
Every American Silver Eagle displays the same classical imagery. The obverse side shows Adolph A. Weinman’s famous depiction of Lady Liberty walking toward the setting sun, holding branches of oak and laurel. Above her, the word “Liberty” is engraved, with the national motto “In God We Trust” and the coin’s date appearing near her feet.
The reverse side features a heraldic bald eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing the nation’s readiness for war and its desire for peace. Above the eagle, thirteen stars form a triangle, honoring the original colonies. Inscriptions include “United States of America” and “1 oz Fine Silver One Dollar.” Proof and burnished coins bear mint marks on the reverse, while bullion coins do not.
Since 2001, coins struck at the West Point Mint carry a “W” mint mark. Burnished coins exclusively bear the “W.” Proof coins have also been minted at San Francisco (“S” mint mark, 1986–1992) and Philadelphia (“P” mint mark, 1993–2000).
2021 New Design – Reverse Changes
For buyers and collectors, 2021 brought a historic update to the American Silver Eagle series. For the first time, the United States Mint changed the reverse design of both the Silver and Gold Eagles. After reviewing 34 different options to replace John Mercanti’s classic heraldic eagle, the US Mint and Secretary of the Treasury selected a new design by Emily Damstra that reimagines the American bald eagle on the reverse.
The new reverse design, introduced in 2021, includes:
This 2021 reverse redesign was released to mark the 35th anniversary of the series, making these coins especially appealing for buyers. The fresh design helps the American Silver Eagle maintain its iconic status and desirability for collectors and investors well into the future.
We also purchase MintSealed American Silver Eagles. These coins come in factory-sealed tubes directly from the US Mint, guaranteeing that the coins remain untouched and in pristine condition. Each sealed tube contains 20 individual coins, originally from a US Mint Monster Box. Our team verifies the condition and authenticity upon receipt, and the tubes remain factory-wrapped with QR-coded stickers for easy tracking and verification.
The US Mint produces the uncirculated American Silver Eagle based strictly on market demand, often making it the highest-minted silver bullion coin. Demand surged during the Great Recession, peaking in 2015 with 47 million coins issued.
Proof coins initially had capped production numbers, but these were later lifted to meet collector demand. Despite this, proof mintage remains significantly lower than bullion versions, with the highest proof production reaching 1.4 million in 1986.
Burnished coins typically have the lowest mintage, produced mainly for collectors. After suspension in 2009 and 2010, burnished coins resumed but have yet to surpass early production highs.
The uncirculated bullion coin has a subtle shine but lacks the striking visual brilliance of collectible versions. Proof coins feature frosted details with mirrored backgrounds, providing sharp contrast and high visual appeal.
Burnished coins receive a special polish by being tumbled before striking, resulting in a luster between that of bullion and proof coins. These coins are handled with gloves to preserve their flawless finish.
We also purchase certified American Silver Eagles graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). These companies assess coins on the Sheldon Scale (1 to 70) to verify condition and authenticity. Common grades include:
