First released in 1986, Proof American Silver Eagles are made from silver bullion and struck multiple times to highlight extremely fine details and give the coin a mirror-like finish. Coins are produced exclusively at the United States Mint and handled by employees with white gloves to preserve the surfaces. They are sealed to maintain their value and sold from the United States Mint in a velvet box with a certificate of authenticity. The United States Mint is the sole producer of authentic Proof Silver Eagles. Since 1986, each coin has been made from high-quality silver bullion. Each coin contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and is struck with extraordinary detail.
The dies used for stamping are examined under a microscope and polished by hand using three types of diamond dust to ensure precision. The blanks are washed and individually inserted into the press, then struck multiple times to bring out the finest details of the design. Proof coins also feature a frosted design against a mirror-like background for maximum contrast.
The design remains consistent each year to maintain continuity. The only variation is the year marked on the coin and any damage from opening the seal. The obverse depicts a full-length Lady Liberty in stride, designed by Adolph A. Weinman, draped in the United States Flag, with her right hand outstretched and the left clutching laurel and oak branches. Rays of the sun appear in the background. The reverse, designed by United States Mint Sculptor John Mercanti, shows a heraldic eagle behind a shield, holding arrows in the left talon and olive branches in the right.
For the 35th anniversary of the Proof American Silver Eagle, the United States Mint introduced a new reverse design by Artistic Infusion Program artist Emily Damstra. The first coins to feature this new design are the Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle coins.
The new reverse shows an American bald eagle descending to its nest, wings spread to slow its landing, clutching a large oak branch to build the nest. The inscriptions are rearranged: “United States of America” along the left, “One Dollar” and “1 oz. Fine Silver” in the lower right, and “E Pluribus Unum” above the weight and metal content.
