One of the most significant coin issues from the Royal Mint of England is the Britannia collection. Introduced as the gold Britannia coin in 1987, today the Britannia Series includes a silver coin and a platinum coin. The British Silver Britannia is the official silver bullion coin of Great Britain and features one of the nation’s most iconic designs on the reverse. Its reputation and worldwide recognition make it a highly sought coin, which we actively purchase from customers.
As a silver bullion coin, the British Silver Britannia has been issued by the Royal Mint every year since its 1997 debut. After 15 years, changes were made to the coin’s size, mass, and silver purity. The Silver Britannia coins from 1997 to 2012 used Britannia silver, an alloy of silver and copper (.958 purity). These early coins had a total mass of 32.45 grams and a diameter of 40 mm.
From 2013 onward, the Royal Mint increased the silver purity to .999 and slightly reduced both the mass and size. Coins issued after 2013 have a total mass of 31.21 grams and a diameter of 38.61 mm.
Aside from changes in size and purity, the obverse effigy has alternated between Queen Elizabeth II and, most recently, King Charles III. The reverse consistently features Philip Nathan’s depiction of Britannia. These details are crucial when assessing coins for purchase.
Three effigies of Queen Elizabeth II have appeared on the obverse. The 1997 coins uniquely feature the third-generation portrait by Raphael Maklouf. From 1998 to 2015, the fourth-generation portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley was used, depicting the Queen wearing the Golden Wedding Crown at the age of 70. In 2016, Jody Clark’s fifth-generation portrait was introduced, blending realism with the royal diadem.
From 2023, King Charles III appears on the obverse in a left-profile portrait without a crown, designed by Martin Jennings. The reverse continues to use Philip Nathan’s Britannia, depicting a proud female figure at the sea’s edge, holding a trident and an olive branch with a Union Jack shield. These design elements are key factors in the value when we purchase Britannia coins from customers.
The Royal Mint also releases limited editions and coins with privy marks, including:
These unique editions often hold higher value, which we evaluate when purchasing from collectors and investors.
The 2021 British Silver Britannia coins introduced four new security features:
