Starting in 2015, the Royal Canadian Mint launched a comprehensive program to enhance the security of its coins, with the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf being the first to benefit. One major upgrade was the introduction of laser-etched radial lines on both obverse and reverse surfaces. Depending on the coin’s design, these lines covered either the entire background or just the outer rim. Their purpose is to scatter light in multiple directions, making counterfeiting far more difficult.
In the following year, the Mint added another security measure, a micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark on the reverse. Inside this privy mark, the final two digits of the coin’s production year are etched, visible only under magnification.

Developed after extensive research, MINTSHIELD effectively prevents “milky spots” or white blemishes that can form on silver during the minting process.
