Read on to learn more about this iconic series and how you can sell your coins to us.

Brief History of the Silver Panda

The Chinese Silver Panda is among the oldest and most collectible silver bullion coins available today. Following the introduction of the Mexican Silver Libertad in 1982, the Chinese Silver Panda debuted in 1983. Originally issued as a proof coin, the first Silver Pandas were under one ounce of silver with a 90% purity from 1983 to 1985. The coin was not produced in 1986 or 1988, but in 1987, the Chinese Mint adjusted the coin to meet international investment standards.

From 1987 onward, the Chinese Silver Panda coin was set at 1 Troy ounce with a purity of .999 silver, and since 1989, it has been consistently issued as an investment-grade bullion coin.

Changes to the Silver Panda

Starting in 1987, the Chinese Mint standardized the coin’s weight and purity to appeal to global investors. From this period until 2015, the Silver Panda was issued in these popular weights:

  • 1/4 Troy ounce
  • 1/2 Troy ounce
  • 1 Troy ounce
  • 5 Troy ounces
  • 12 Troy ounces
  • 1 Kilogram

In 2016, the Chinese Mint transitioned the coins from Troy ounces to gram-based weights to align with the metric system, reflecting the nation’s standard of measurement.

Designs of the Silver Panda

The reverse of all Chinese Silver Panda coins features the outer façade of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, the main building of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. This side also includes engravings of “The People’s Republic of China” in Mandarin and the year of issue.

The obverse is famous for its annually updated Giant Panda design. Each year, the mint presents a new depiction of the iconic panda species, typically showing an adult or an adult with a cub. This yearly change drives collector interest and helps maintain the coins’ popularity. The obverse also displays the coin’s face value, weight, purity, and metal content.

Mintage of the Silver Panda

The Chinese Mint has consistently issued Silver Panda bullion coins to meet investor demand. Since 2016, the 1-oz coin has been replaced by a 30-gram version, available individually or in bulk packaging. Other weights continue to be produced regularly, with larger coins like the 5 oz and 1-kilogram versions often issued as proof coins with low mintage, making them highly collectible.

Packaging for Chinese Silver Panda Coins

Individual 30-gram coins are usually sold in protective capsules, while bulk purchases are packaged in plastic sheets of 15 coins or Monster Boxes containing 450 coins. This packaging ensures safe handling and storage, which we consider when evaluating coins for purchase.
