Get the Best Price for Your Silver Dollars

Although the US dollar is now primarily issued as a green bill, the original silver dollar remains a prized piece of American history. At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we buy silver coins, including US silver dollars, directly from customers, offering competitive valuations based on the coin’s condition, rarity, and silver content. Collectors and investors alike can turn these historic coins into immediate value, reflecting both their historical and precious metal significance.

History of the Silver Dollar

The first US silver dollar with a $1 (USD) face value was the 1804 silver dollar, featuring a right-profile bust of Liberty on the obverse. Silver dollars and the $1 denomination were minted intermittently between 1804 and 1836, including the Gobrecht dollar during this period.

The major issuance of silver dollars began in 1836 and continued through 1873. At that time, silver discoveries in the southeastern US and Nevada led to an influx of metal and prompted a temporary suspension of silver dollar coining. Production resumed in 1878 and continued regularly until 1904. In the 20th century, silver dollar minting became irregular. The Morgan Dollar returned briefly in 1921 before being replaced by the Peace Silver Dollar. Peace Dollars were minted until 1928, halted, then briefly reintroduced in 1934 and 1935.

Though US silver dollars are no longer minted, plenty of coins remain available in personal collections and as circulated pieces. At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we purchase these coins, providing fair market valuations for both collectible and investment-grade silver dollars.

Popular Examples of the Silver Dollar in US History

When looking for affordable silver coins, there are three major US silver dollars that collectors and investors often seek. The Seated Liberty Dollar is the oldest and longest-running of the series, making it the rarest and hardest to find. The Morgan Silver Dollar and Peace Silver Dollar remain widely available, often found in personal collections or as former circulation pieces. Here’s a closer look at each:

Seated Liberty: Introduced in 1836, the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar was struck regularly until 1873. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse depicts Liberty seated on a rock, with the US heraldic shield at her side and 13 stars along the upper edge. The reverse design changed over time: from 1840 to 1865, it featured the US heraldic eagle with only the nation of issue and face value; from 1866 onward, the national motto “In God We Trust” appeared above the eagle.

Morgan Silver Dollar: Following the suspension of the Seated Liberty Dollar in 1873 due to a silver influx from Nevada’s Comstock Lode, the Morgan Silver Dollar debuted in 1878. Designed by George T. Morgan, it features a left-profile portrait of Liberty on the obverse. Struck from 1878 to 1904, coin production paused until 1921, when the Morgan Dollar was briefly reissued.

Peace Silver Dollar: Introduced in late 1921 to replace the Morgan Dollar, the Peace Silver Dollar offered a modernized left-profile image of Liberty on the obverse. Its design commemorates the peace treaties following World War I. The coin circulated until 1928, saw a brief reissue in 1934–1935, and was then discontinued.

Eisenhower Silver Dollar: Released 36 years after the Peace Dollar, the Eisenhower Silver Dollar was the first US dollar to contain notable silver since 1935. Produced from 1971 to 1978, the coin is 40% silver in its silver-clad version. The obverse depicts a left-profile bust of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, designed by Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro. The reverse features an eagle landing on the moon, inspired by the Apollo 11 mission patch from 1969.

Why Sell Silver Dollars?

True silver dollars contain 90% silver (.900 fine), making them a valuable investment option. Circulated coins show signs of wear but retain intrinsic value due to their silver content. Rare or certified examples by NGC or PCGS can command premium prices. At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we evaluate coins carefully, ensuring customers receive fair offers reflecting both collectible and silver market value.
