Launched in 2020, the South Korean Silver Phoenix bullion medal celebrates a legendary creature deeply rooted in Korean culture. Known as the “bonghwang” in Korean, the Phoenix first appeared in written records in the 14th century and has long been revered across East Asian cultures, including China and Japan, as a symbol of royalty or the emperor. Renowned for its nobility, the Phoenix is said to live a long life, then burst into flames, reducing itself to ashes, from which a young Phoenix rises anew.
Each medal contains 1 troy ounce of .999 pure silver in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and features two distinct designs:
- Obverse: This side showcases an elegant depiction of the Phoenix in flight. Its flowing plumage spreads around the bird as it flaps its wings and extends its talons, appearing ready to land. For the first time in KOMSCO’s history, a latent security image is engraved on the coin. When viewed from different angles, the image reveals either the Korean character for “bong” or “hwang.”
- Reverse: The reverse draws inspiration from the Seal of the President of South Korea. It features two Phoenix heads in side-profile relief flanking the central Taeguk, with an additional Phoenix head in left-profile relief above. The Phoenix has been a central element of the presidential seal since 1967.
South Korean Taekwondo Series
Launched in 2019, the South Korean Taekwondo Series features annual reverse designs celebrating Korea’s national sport: taekwondo. Compared to other martial arts across Asia, the history of taekwondo is relatively recent. It was developed by Korean martial artists returning to their homeland after Japan’s defeat in World War II.
During the Japanese Occupation (1910–1945), indigenous Korean martial arts such as Taekkyon, Subak, and Gwonbeop were banned. Returning martial artists, many trained in Japanese and Chinese styles, especially karate, established kwans (schools) that became the foundation of taekwondo. By combining traditional Korean techniques with elements of karate, these pioneers created a martial art emphasizing fast, dynamic movements, including high kicks, head-height strikes, and spinning or jumping techniques.
