Shipwreck Silver from the SS Tilawa

Something is captivating about owning a piece of history. People are drawn to stories of the past, from epic adventures to tragic events. Some silver products carry stories through design or limited mintage, but few hold a direct, tangible link to historical events.

Shipwreck silver presents a unique opportunity for collectors and investors alike, offering a connection to the high seas and history’s dramatic moments. At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we buy Tilawa Shipwreck Silver, allowing customers to convert these remarkable pieces into immediate cash.

Brief Background on the Silver

The SS Tilawa’s story is a tragic one, often referred to as the Indian Titanic. Its sinking in the Indian Ocean led to significant loss of life and the disappearance of its precious cargo.

The Tilawa carried nearly 60 tons of silver bullion in 2,364 bars, destined for the South African Mint for coin production in South Africa and Egypt. When torpedoed on November 23, 1942, the Silver sank with the ship, taking with it countless lives.

Recovered in 2017 by Argentum Exploration from a depth of 1.6 miles, the silver was refined into bullion valued at $43 million in 2020. At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we purchase Tilawa silver from collectors, providing fair market pricing and fast payment.

After legal resolution over ownership, some 800,000 ounces of Tilawa silver have been refined into modern silver bars and rounds. These items combine history with investment-grade bullion.

We evaluate and buy Tilawa Shipwreck Silver directly from individuals, offering secure transactions and immediate cash for owners of these rare pieces.

History of the SS Tilawa

The SS Tilawa was constructed in 1924 in Hebburn, a town within the South Tyneside borough of Tyne and Wear, England. Built by Hawthorn Leslie & Co. Ltd for the British Indian Steam Navigation Company, this 10,000-ton steam passenger liner featured three decks, could accommodate 3,290 passengers across two classes, and offered ample cargo space.

During World War II, the Tilawa was requisitioned by the Royal Navy to serve as a troopship, frequently operating between British ports and India. In November 1942, the vessel departed from Ballard Pier en route to Durban, Mombasa, and Maputo. On this fateful journey, the ship carried 60 tons of silver, 732 passengers, 222 crew members, and a total cargo of 600 tons.

On November 23, 1942, the SS Tilawa was struck by two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine, sinking the ship. Of those aboard, 280 lives were lost, while 678 survivors were eventually rescued. Most of the survivors were saved after two days adrift by the HMS Birmingham, with an additional four rescued later by the RMS Carthage.

The tragedy earned the SS Tilawa the somber nickname “the Indian Titanic,” reflecting the heavy loss of life. Moreover, it remains the only recorded vessel sunk due to enemy action in the Indian Ocean during World War II.

Court Battles

The ownership of the recovered silver was contested between Argentum Exploration in the UK and the South African government. In May 2024, the UK Supreme Court ruled in favor of South Africa, confirming the silver was intended for South African coinage. An out-of-court settlement was later reached to finalize distribution.
