The Gold Philharmonics of the Austrian Mint

At DEIGOLDANDSILVERCOINS, we understand the value of premium gold coins like the Austrian Gold Philharmonic. Investors and collectors often turn to sovereign mint coins due to their trusted purity and craftsmanship. The Austrian Gold Philharmonic has stood as a highly sought-after gold coin since its introduction by the Austrian Mint in 1989, becoming one of the longest-running and most recognizable gold coins worldwide.

Celebrating the Arts & Culture of a Nation

The Austrian Mint launched the Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins in 1989, showcasing cultural pride through its design. Initially available in 1 oz and 1/4 oz gold coins, the collection later expanded to include:

  • 1/10 oz Gold Philharmonic (1991)
  • 1/2 oz Gold Philharmonic (1994)
  • 1/25 oz Gold Philharmonic (2014)

The series honors the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the world’s most prestigious orchestras, with origins dating back to informal performances in the 1830s and its formal establishment in 1842.

Designs of the Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin

Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfer crafted a design that reflects Austria’s rich musical heritage. Key design elements include:

  • Obverse: Features the Musikverein pipe organ located in Vienna’s Golden Hall, a symbol closely tied to the Vienna Philharmonic’s performances. The inscriptions are in German and include “Republik Oesterreich,” “Unze Gold 9999,” along with the coin’s weight, face value, and year.

  • Reverse: Displays a collection of musical instruments, including a large cello at the center, flanked by violins, with a harp, horn, and bassoon in the background. The German inscription “Wiener Philharmoniker” appears here.

Like the American Gold Eagle and Gold Maple Leaf, the Austrian Gold Philharmonic features designs that have remained unchanged since 1989. Their enduring popularity has led the Austrian Mint to use the same designs on the Austrian Silver Philharmonic (introduced in 2008) and the Austrian Platinum Philharmonic (introduced in 2016).

Details of the Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coin

Every Austrian Gold Philharmonic coin is struck with .9999 fine gold. Before 2002, coins bore face values in Austrian Shillings:

  • 1 oz: 2,000 Schillings
  • 1/2 oz: 1,000 Schillings
  • 1/4 oz: 500 Schillings
  • 1/10 oz: 200 Schillings

Since Austria’s adoption of the Euro, face values have been updated as follows:

  • 1 oz: €100
  • 1/2 oz: €50
  • 1/4 oz: €25
  • 1/10 oz: €10
  • 1/25 oz: €4

Diversity and Availability of Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins

The Austrian Gold Philharmonic’s production corresponds with investor demand. Certain years stand out due to high mintage and popularity, including 1990, which was Europe’s best-selling gold coin and the second globally. Other notable years are 1992, 1995, 1996, and 2000, when this coin ranked as the world’s top gold bullion piece.

Although the Austrian Mint does not produce proof versions of the Philharmonic, limited editions have been issued:

  • The Big Phil (2004): A massive 1,000 Troy ounce coin containing .9999 pure gold with a face value of €100,000. Only 15 were minted to mark the 15th anniversary.

  • 20 oz Gold Philharmonic (2009): Commemorating 20 years of production, these coins contain 20 Troy ounces of pure gold with a €14,000 face value. Three batches of 2,009 coins were minted for Europe, America, and Japan.

The 1/25 oz coin, introduced in 2014 as a 25th-anniversary edition, remains popular among investors seeking fractional gold coins.

Other Austrian Gold Coins

Beyond the Gold Philharmonic, the Austrian Mint has a deep heritage of producing gold coins for collectors and investors alike. Historic and commemorative coins include:

  • Ducat Gold Coins: Dating from the 19th century until World War I, Austrian Ducats reflect the legacy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, available in 1 and 4 Ducat sizes.

  • Schilling Gold Coins: The Austrian Schilling served as Austria’s currency until 2002, with many historic designs reissued as restrikes.

  • Corona Gold Coins: Issued during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, these coins commonly came in 20 and 40 Corona denominations, with occasional 10 and 100 Corona pieces.
